Spanish star Nico Williams ‘crazy’ about move to Barcelona as Arsenal…

Athletic Club and Spain star Nico Williams is one of the most fun players to watch in the world right now, and with a €58m buyout fee it seems like a no-brainer for big clubs to sign him. Sure, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest, but the player would prefer to stay in Spain.

Both Sport and MD report that Barcelona are the player’s preferred destination if he moves to Spain this summer. His connection with the likes of Pedri and Lamine Yamal for Spain is an attraction for Williams, with the former claiming that Chelsea have been told that Williams’ preference is for the Catalan side.

The latter explain that the desire to bring Williams from Catalonia continues to grow, while his relationships with his Spanish team-mates are a testament to his suitability for Camp Nou. The 21-year-old also has room to grow, something that is less certain about the other top target for the position, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz. They also say that the deal could be done without selling Raphinha – but at the moment they are unable to sign anyone.

Williams could have joined either of the aforementioned clubs for free this summer, as his contract expired in November. However, Williams instructed his agent to renegotiate a deal with Athletic in order to stay in the good books of San Mames and his brother Inaki, signing until 2026. He is happy in Bilbao and was reluctant to leave under a cloud, as he is aware of everything the club has done for him and his brother.

Williams certainly seems like a no-brainer for Barcelona if they can pull off a deal, but that remains shrouded in uncertainty. There are conflicting reports emerging about their competition, with some sources saying Chelsea have passed on Williams due to cost, and others claiming they are preparing a large salary offer. Either way, Barcelona will have to trust Williams to prioritize them over cash this summer, if they can manage to scrape together the funds to pull off a deal.
