James McAtee is expected to join Manchester City on their pre-season tour of the United States amid interest from Chelsea and a host of other Premier League rivals.

The 21-year-old has spent the past two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, making 75 appearances for the Blades during their promotion and relegation campaigns.

City know Chelsea are among those closely monitoring the youth player’s progress and plan to allow McAtee to join Pep Guardiola’s squad for a four-match tour of the United States.

Blues’ new manager Enzo Maresca tried to sign the attacking midfielder when he was manager of Leicester City last summer, but was unable to secure his signature.

McAtee left for Asia with City in 2023, but a return to Sheffield United was secured once the competition got underway.

McAtee, who made seven first-team appearances for City, has two years left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola’s squad will be bolstered by a number of young players from America, with many of City’s squad still at the European Championship and Copa America.

Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Ederson are the main names set to feature throughout the tour, while Belgium’s elimination in the round of 16 opens up the possibility of Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku dropping out midway through the tour.

Players’ union FIFPro recommends a three-week holiday between tournaments and pre-season training, which would take the pair to City’s second or third destination during their stay in the United States.

However, Guardiola is known for giving players longer breaks, with Croatians Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic eliminated in the group stage.
