4 down, 2 to go: Fred Wellsby Junior Tour kicks off in Eastern Fraser Valley

Annual tour lasts nine days and six different routes through Chilliwack and Abbotsford

Four rounds of the Fred Wellsby Junior Divot Tour are officially on the schedule.

The nine-day tournament began on July 2 at Kinkora Golf Course in Chilliwack, where it was Abbotsford’s Ben Fleenor who finished with the best overall score of the day with a 7-over 63 in the 14-16 age group. However, it was Chilliwack’s Owen Hopfner who finished just a stroke behind Fleenor in that opening round, who has since produced some impressive performances.

On the second day, the tour moved to Valley Golf Course in Abbotsford, where Hopfner posted the day’s best score with a stunning 4-over 66 and three birdies through 18. Hopfner, continuing his form, shot a 5-over 67 the next day and a 4-over 60 on Monday (July 8) to officially qualify for the tour’s Championship Round on July 11.

Hopfner isn’t the only Chillwack representative on the tour, though, and he’s not the only Hopfner. Owen’s younger brothers Kaleb and Blake both play on the tour in the 11-13 age group, along with Chilliwack’s Mason Neufeld.

Kaleb and Blake finished the opening round with the second and third highest scores of the day, 12-over 68 and 14-over 70 respectively. Neufeld was not far behind with a 16-over 72.

Kaleb had another strong showing in the following round at Valley Golf Course, shooting an 11-over 73 to finish the round in third place. Blake and Mason failed to match their highs from the previous day, but still managed respectable scores of 19-over 81.

Kaleb came out strong again in the third round, shooting his way to the best overall score of the day, just two over par. Neufeld rebounded from his previous performance to shoot a 10-over 72, while Blake posted a 16-over 78.

The fourth round on Monday (July 8) was held at Cheam Mountain Golf Course. Kaleb again fought for a top position, finishing second in his age group with a score of 6-over 62. Blake recorded a score of 17-over 73, while Neufeld finished two strokes behind him.

Like his brother, Kaleb has qualified for the championship round on July 11, while Blake and Neufeld can still book their tickets for the penultimate round final at Cultus Lake Golf Course on Wednesday (July 10).
